What Is Proof of Reserves?
Proof of Reserves (PoR) is a transparency approach used by digital-asset platforms to provide evidence about assets held in reserve. Depending on the methodology, information may include on-chain wallet balances, asset holdings, liabilities, or cryptographic verification methods.
Why Reserve Transparency Matters
Reserve information can help users understand how a platform presents its ability to support customer assets. However, reserve data should not be interpreted in isolation. A meaningful assessment may require consideration of liabilities, the scope and timing of the data, the assets included, and whether an independent party has verified the methodology.
4M's Current Transparency Position
The current 4M website describes transparent and verifiable reserves and states that it regularly discloses on-chain reserve data and fund flows. It also describes asset transparency as part of its approach to building a more predictable trading experience. Users should rely on the latest official reserve information when evaluating current balances or disclosures.
On-Chain Verification
Blockchain data can allow users to independently inspect balances associated with disclosed wallet addresses when those addresses and verification methods are provided. Users should check the relevant network, asset, wallet ownership evidence, snapshot date, and methodology before drawing conclusions.
Reserves Are Not the Same as a Full Financial Audit
Proof of Reserves can provide useful evidence about specified assets at a specified time, but it does not automatically establish every aspect of a company's financial condition. Users should distinguish reserve attestations, on-chain disclosures, liability information, and independent audits.
What Users Should Check
When reviewing a PoR page, consider the publication date, assets covered, wallet addresses or verification method, treatment of liabilities, methodology, and whether the information has been independently reviewed. Also check whether the disclosure is current enough for the decision you are making.
Important Notice
This page explains the concept of Proof of Reserves and 4M's published transparency positioning. It does not claim that any particular reserve ratio, audit, or independent assurance exists unless that information is explicitly published in the current official 4M disclosure.
